Bethesda Barracudas Swim for the Troops

 

 

WHAT:           The Bethesda Barracudas are pleased to support Give an Hour™ (www.giveanhour.org) in its effort to provide critical mental health care to our troops and their families by hosting the 4^th annual fund raising event, Swim for the Troops.

 

Children will obtain sponsors and will pledge to swim laps for the troops.  Sponsors will be free to choose the amount that they would like to donate per lap that a child swims. Each child who participates in Swim for the Troops will receive a prize for giving their time to this important cause. Special prizes will be awarded at the Barracuda picnic for swimmers who went above and beyond their pledged laps.   Parents are invited to participate.

 

ABOUT:         Give an Hour™ is a national nonprofit organization, founded by Bethesda resident, Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen.  Give an Hour™ providers deliver mental health counseling services to active duty service members, members of our National Guard and Reserve forces, and veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan who have separated or retired from any branch of military service. In addition to these military personnel and their spouses and children, Give an Hour™ is also offering services to parents, siblings, and unmarried partners who are not entitled to receive mental health benefits through the military or VA. Currently, there are nearly 5,000 mental health professionals volunteering on the network.  Give an Hour™ has providers in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, and Puerto Rico.   To date, these providers have given more than $2.7 million in free mental health services.

WHAT: The United States House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold a hearing entitled, "Viral Hepatitis: The Secret Epidemic." The hearing will examine issues surrounding the prevention, detection, and control of viral hepatitis.



WHEN: Thursday, June 17, 2010, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

WHY: In response to a number of stimuli, including the Institute of Medicine Report released in January, the hearing will provide a forum for members of Congress to discuss viral hepatitis, its growing impact on the U.S., and options for improving the federal government’s response to hepatitis in the United States.

· An estimated 6 million Americans are living with chronic infection of Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV) – roughly six times the number of Americans with HIV. Most people infected are unaware: over 50% with HBV and over 75% with HCV.

· The costs to the healthcare system generated by advanced liver disease associated with chronic HCV infection are projected to increase from $30 billion to $85 billion per year. Medicare will be especially hard hit, as 2/3 of Americans with chronic HCV infection are baby boomers, and 75% are unaware of their status. These patients will soon age into Medicare and become prime candidates for advanced liver disease unless they are identified and treated.

· If passed, The Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer Control and Prevention Act of 2009 would authorize a comprehensive prevention, education, research and medical management referral program to reduce the disease burden associated with these infections, and allow for the development of a national hepatitis strategy and implementation of the IOM’s recommendations, which include increased resources for prevention, testing, treatment and care.

(Washington, DC – June 11, 2010) -- The Environmental Protection Agency has broad discretion, delegated to it by Congress in several different legislative acts, in regulating all manner of pollutants. But what are the limits of that discretion? To what extent must and should regulators consider the costs of proposed regulations and weigh them against the benefits of those regulations? Should EPA balance economic costs on one side, and benefits to health and the environment on the other side? Or are certain environmental or health hazards so dire that regulating them must be done at virtually any cost?
