JASA Seminars Focus on New York’s Changing Political and Cultural Landscape

New York Then and Now: Politics, Media and Changing Landscapes in the City That Never Sleeps is a series of lively and engaging lectures presented by JASA’s NextAct. “You’re never too old to learn,” said Aileen Gitleson, JASA CEO. “NextAct is one of many opportunities JASA offers to help quench the thirst for learning that exists in our the 55+ community.”

The Thursday evening programs debut on November 4 with Alan Weisman, former producer for 60 Minutes, CBS Sunday Morning and CBS Evening News, who will address After Tammany: New York City Politics From the Post-War to the New Millennium.

Weisman, Sanford Socolow, and Philip Scheffler, will jointly present “Breaking News: How Media Impacts Politics and Life in New York City” on November 11. Socolow is executive producer of Cronkite Productions, Inc., a video production company founded and chaired by Walter Cronkite and former executive producer of The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. Scheffler, an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University’s Journalism School, is also a former executive producer of 60 Minutes.

Wrapping up the series on November 18 is Roberta Brandes Gratz, an award-winning journalist and urban critic, lecturer and author, who will speak on “The Battle For Gotham: New York in the Shadow of Robert Moses and Jane Jacobs.”

Unique Program Model is Supported by a Grant from Target



More than 60 children (aged 6 -12) will “shop” for their supper — and their breakfast and lunch — assisted by a dozen Target volunteers, at the launch the Food Bank For New York City’s “Open Market” BackPack Program, in partnership with Union Settlement Association. The program —the only one of its kind in the U.S. to feature the Open Market format — is designed to alleviate hunger among low-income children throughout New York City, and provides bags filled with healthy ‘take home’ food items to make balanced nutritious meals when other resources are not available, such as on weekends and holidays, and to educate kids about healthy food choices on Wednesday, October 27, 4pm, at Union Settlement Foundation, 237 East 104th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues), Manhattan.



Youngsters will shop for favorite foods up and down the Open Market aisles which are labeled — protein, dairy, fruit, vegetable, grain — to assist with nutrition education. Kids will also try their hand at cooking up a favorite recipe and participate in a physical activity.



More than one out of every four children in NYC (ages 17 and younger) lives below the poverty level. In East Harlem, 47% of children live in poverty. One in five New York City children relies on emergency food programs such as a soup kitchen or food pantry.

World leaders including President Barack Obama have devoted significant attention and political capital to advancing progress on nuclear nonproliferation, disarmament, and nuclear security. However, progress is often difficult to measure, in part because of differing perceptions of the threat posed by nuclear weapons and what constitutes the nuclear nonproliferation "mainstream."

On October 27, the Arms Control Association will present the findings of a new study, Assessing Progress on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament: 2009-2010 Report Card. This 65-page research report assesses the performance of 11 key states in 10 universally-recognized categories of nonproliferation, disarmament and nuclear security:

• nuclear testing;

• the production of fissile material for weapons;

• nuclear weapons alert levels;

• reducing nuclear forces;

• nuclear weapons use policy;

• nuclear-weapon-free zones;

• international safeguards;

• controls on nuclear weapons-related exports;

• measures to improve the security of nuclear material and facilities; and

• measures to prevent illicit nuclear trafficking and nuclear terrorism.

The report grades the states on an A through F scale and describes in detail the basis for each grade. The Report Card provides country-by-country assessments for China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, India, Israel, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, and Syria, and developments elsewhere.

ACA executive director Daryl Kimball and nonproliferation analyst Peter Crail will present and discuss the Report Card, and George Perkovich, vice-president for studies and director of the Nuclear Policy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace will comment on the report and its implications for policy makers. Washington, D.C. - Equal Justice Works will recognize the contributions of leaders in public interest law at its Annual Awards Dinner, to be held on Thursday, October 21. Award recipients at this year’s event are Teri Plummer McClure, Senior Vice President for United Parcel Service (UPS); Blake D. Morant, Dean and Professor of Law at Wake Forest University Law School; and Jessica Stein, a student at the University of Connecticut Law School. David Gregory, host of NBC’s Meet the Press, will serve as emcee for the evening.

The Equal Justice Works Annual Awards Dinner is one of the largest gatherings of public interest law supporters in the country and recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to achieving equal justice on behalf of underserved communities and causes.

Teri Plummer McClure will receive the organization’s Scales of Justice Award for her record of promoting equality, justice and diversity as well as public service and pro bono service. A 15-year employee of UPS, Ms. Plummer McClure oversees the company’s legal, compliance and public affairs activities worldwide. She is also known for her service on various bar associations and boards including the UPS Foundation, the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights.

The John R. Kramer Outstanding Law School Dean Award will be given to Wake Forest Law School’s Blake Morant. This honor recognizes Morant’s efforts to instill public service values and create opportunities for future public interest lawyers on Wake Forest’s campus. Since Dean Morant began his tenure in 2007, the school’s public interest law clinics have tripled from two to six; public interest internships for students have expanded; and the school’s Public Interest Retreat, designed to connect students with alumni involved in public interest and public service, was launched.

University of Connecticut Law School student Jessica Stein is the recipient of the Exemplary Public Service Award. A third year law student, Ms. Stein is receiving the award in recognition of her efforts to launch the Hartford, CT chapter of the Homeless Experience Legal Protection (H.E.L.P.) Project.

Washington, D.C. – With the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) preparing to establish a national program on greenhouse gas emissions and fuel economy standards for commercial trucks, EPA, environmental and industry representatives hold a press conference Tuesday morning to outline the significant technological and environmental advances in the new generation of 2010 diesel trucks and buses.

A sampling of 2010 heavy duty trucks and buses which feature the most modern clean emissions technology in existence will be on display. The press conference will also include a “clean hanky” test where a new white handkerchief is placed over a running truck’s tailpipe to illustrate the low emissions of 2010 truck technology.

“The historic progress in clean diesel technology is remarkable. Consider that it would take 60 of these 2010 trucks to equal the same emissions from one pre-1988 truck. A 60-1 ratio is amazing.



“While continuously making commercial trucks more fuel efficient, diesel engine and truck manufacturers have also been making them dramatically cleaner. Today’s new 2010 heavy-duty diesel truck deploys the most state-of-the-art engine and emissions control systems and has near zero emissions; a considerable accomplishment considering that increased fuel efficiency and lower emissions are near opposite and competing forces in diesel engine design,” Schaeffer said.

Subtitled Reform, the Quality Agenda and Resource Use, the report includes NCQA's latest analysis of the American health care system and the implementation of reform policies that can improve quality.

Located at the University of Maryland, the Library of American Broadcasting is a 38-year-old institution serving as the national information resource for the radio and television industries and the academic communities that rely upon it for depth and expertise. $101 Million Needed for 3,214 AIDS Patients Put on Waiting Lists in 9 States

In 9 states, funding has again run out to provide desperately-needed treatment for low income AIDS patients under the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). More than 3,214 patients in Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina have been placed on waiting lists, unable to receive life-saving medicines, now that $25 million in stopgap funding approved this spring has run out.

President Obama has been urged to provide at least an additional $101 million to secure coverage through Fiscal Year 2010 and S. 3401, the “Addressing Cost Containment Measures to Ensure the Stability and Success of the ADAP” Act, would transfer $126 million from un-obligated Stimulus funds to provide assistance.

Entitled "What Happened to Hope and Change? A Poll of 2008 Voters," the poll shows how the minority, young and low-income voters who now form one-third of the electorate remain actively engaged in the 2010 midterm elections, fundamentally believe the government should do more to help people and hold opinions that are in stark contrast to the Tea Party-dominant, anti-government message that has distorted the public's understanding of what Americans want from the administration.

84% of black voters, 77% of youth voters, and 76% of low-income voters strongly support raising the minimum wage above the poverty line.

Among survey respondents self-identified as Tea Party supporters, 76% reported their personal financial situation as fairly good or very good; 76% are married; 78% went to college; 84% are working or retired; and 92% are White.

39% of low-income voters, 37% of black voters and 21% of youth voters reported having to worry about buying food for their families in the past year struggled to eat. Less than 6% of Tea Party supporters reported the same struggles.

71% of black voters, 59% of youth voters, and 60.5% of low-income voters strongly agree that government should work to provide for the needs of all citizens. Only 20% of Tea Party sympathizers agreed.

69% of black voters, 57% of youth voters, and 59% of low-income voters believe the federal government should work to ensure that all able and willing Americans have work.

70% of black voters, 61% of low-income voters and 55% of young voters approve of government spending to help homeowners facing foreclosure, compared to 40% percent of all voters and just 13% of Tea Party sympathizers.

Conducted by Discovery Research Group - based in Salt Lake City, Utah - for Project Vote between July 7, 2010 and August 11, 2010 and written and analyzed by Project Vote Director of Research Dr. Lorraine Minnite, a leading researcher of voting trends, social change and institutional reform, the poll surveyed 1,947 Americans who cast ballots in 2008, with oversamples of Black voters, low-income voters, and voters under the age of 30 which allowed Project Vote to make reliable comparisons among these emerging electorate groups to self-identified Tea Party sympathizers and the overall national voter pool.

What:   As a place of great artistic history, cultural diversity, and environmental importance, the Gulf region has an important place in our world. The urgency of this situation, as millions of gallons of oil flood the waters, suffocate the ocean, and threaten the livelihood of the people, gets greater with each day. Join us as we raise our voices against the greed and corruption that caused this catastrophe.

Split This Rock, Institute for Policy Studies, and Eatonville Restaurant announce Broken Gulf: A Benefit for the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, featuring poetry, food, live music, and a raffle! Congressional Briefing to Focus on Global Tiger Crisis

A Congressional Briefing on Thursday, July 22 will discuss the state of wild tigers, current efforts to ensure their survival and how the US can help ensure that tiger numbers double over the next decade. Experts will discuss the need for high level US representation at the upcoming Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and World Bank President Robert Zoellick. Other issues include increased US funding and technical support for on-the-ground tiger conservation in Asia.and stricter US laws around captive tigers (there are more tigers in captivity in the US than there are in the wild around the world).

In this “Year of the Tiger” as few as 3,200 tigers are left in the wild and their numbers are declining from a combination of poaching, habitat loss, poorly planned development and illegal trafficking. Three tiger sub-species have gone extinct and another, the South China Tiger, has not been seen in the wild in 25 years. Wild tigers now occupy only seven percent of their historic range. Tiger range countries and their partners have agreed to a goal of doubling tiger numbers by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022.

People with Disabilities to March and Rally in Support of Americans with Disabilities Act

WHAT: National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) members will march and rally in Washington, D.C Wednesday July 21st from 9:30am - 12:30pm to draw attention to the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and to focus on the problems that still must be addressed, to finally bring full social, economic, and political equality to people with disabilities. 

WHEN: Wednesday, July 21st, from 9:30am to 12:30pm

WHERE: March begins at  Grand Hyatt, 1000 H St., NW,(9:30am) proceeds to the rally site at  reflecting pool on Maryland Avenue in front of the Capitol(11:15am).

HOW: NCIL members, who include many with disabilities in wheelchairs, will march on the Washington Mall, to  a rally where they'll be addressed by prominent legislators and disability rights advocates.
