Social Justice Poetry Helps Louisiana Residents Battle Big Oil

POWER OF SOCIAL JUSTICE POETRY HELPS LOUISIANA RESIDENTS BATTLE BIG OIL

What:   As a place of great artistic history, cultural diversity, and environmental importance, the Gulf region has an important place in our world. The urgency of this situation, as millions of gallons of oil flood the waters, suffocate the ocean, and threaten the livelihood of the people, gets greater with each day. Join us as we raise our voices against the greed and corruption that caused this catastrophe.

Split This Rock, Institute for Policy Studies, and Eatonville Restaurant announce Broken Gulf: A Benefit for the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, featuring poetry, food, live music, and a raffle! The benefit will feature the DC Youth Slam Team, DC Poets Sonya Renee, Chris August, and Kyle Dargan, and Mississippi Poet Angela Ball.  There will be raffle items from Fiddleheads, ACKC, and a Mississippi eco-friendly clothing artisan.

Tickets are $10 and can be bought at www.splitthisrock.org or at the door. All proceeds will go to support the Louisiana Bucket Brigade (labucketbrigade.org), a 501(c)3, grassroots environmental health and justice organization that has been helping residents living near refineries fight air pollution and is now helping those residents track and respond to the BP Oil Spill Disaster.

VIP screening of Countdown to Zero followed by a reception to discuss the film.

During the cold war, public consciousness fixated on the atomic bomb. Then the cold war ended, and we retreated into denial. In fact, the danger of nuclear annihilation never disappeared; it only swelled. Countdown to Zero sweeps us into a scorching, hypnotic journey around the world to reveal the palpable possibility of nuclear disaster and frame an issue on which human survival itself hangs.

Scientists, world leaders, and security experts—including Valerie Plame herself—expose the absurdities and alarming realities of the situation. The 1990s heralded a second nuclear age. Many countries and terrorist groups are now actively acquiring fissile materials and construction blueprints. The possibility of an accident or miscalculation looms even larger. As the film projects a startling vision, interviews with Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Tony Blair, and Pervez Musharraf yield a unified message: our only option is to eradicate every-last nuclear missile. Luckily for us, getting to zero is possible—step by step. Let's jump-start the change

Congressional Briefing to Focus on Global Tiger Crisis

A Congressional Briefing on Thursday, July 22 will discuss the state of wild tigers, current efforts to ensure their survival and how the US can help ensure that tiger numbers double over the next decade. Experts will discuss the need for high level US representation at the upcoming Tiger Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, hosted by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and World Bank President Robert Zoellick. Other issues include increased US funding and technical support for on-the-ground tiger conservation in Asia.and stricter US laws around captive tigers (there are more tigers in captivity in the US than there are in the wild around the world).

The briefing is sponsored by Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, D-Guam, Chair, House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife.

WHEN/WHERE:

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Briefing: 4-5 PM, 1324 Longworth House Office Building

Reception: 5-7 PM, 1334 Longworth House Office Building (refreshments provided)

WHO:

·         Dr. Sybille Klenzendorf, Managing Director of Species Conservation, World Wildlife Fund

·         Crawford Allan, Director of TRAFFIC-North America

·         Dr. John Robinson, Executive Vice President of Conservation and Science and Chief Conservation Officer, Wildlife Conservation Society

WHY:

In this “Year of the Tiger” as few as 3,200 tigers are left in the wild and their numbers are declining from a combination of poaching, habitat loss, poorly planned development and illegal trafficking. Three tiger sub-species have gone extinct and another, the South China Tiger, has not been seen in the wild in 25 years. Wild tigers now occupy only seven percent of their historic range. Tiger range countries and their partners have agreed to a goal of doubling tiger numbers by the next Year of the Tiger in 2022.
